Curry leaves known as “kadi patta” in Hindi, “karuvepillai” in Tamil is commonly used in Indian cuisine. But today we are going to see how to make hair oil with curry leaves. Curry leaves oil (karuvepillai ennai) is very effecting in treating many hair related problems. Making curry leaves oil at home is very easy. This oil smells good and is very effective in preventing hair fall. I personally use this hair oil and have never suffered from dandruff or any hair related problems all these years. Today we will learn how to make curry leaves oil at home to prevent hair loss and premature greying.

Ingredients needed

   Coconut Oil – 1 cup
   Curry leaves – 1/4 cup firmly packed
   Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp

Preparation 

Wash curry leaves, pat it dry and spread it on a cloth to dry in shade. There should be no moisture in the curry leaves.

Grind curry leaves without adding water. It need not be a paste. You can also add the leaves as such.

Method 

Heat a cup of coconut oil, add a tsp of fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.

Cook on medium low heat stirring continuously.

When the bubbling subsides and the leaves turn crisp, turn off the heat. Leave it to cool.

Let the leaves remain in oil overnight.

Then filter it and store it in a clean bottle. Curry leaves oil is ready to use.

How to use Curry leaves oil

Take some oil and apply it on your entire scalp using your finger tips.

Remain for an hour, then wash your hair normally using shampoo or homemade herbal shampoo.

This can be down twice a week.

This oil is safe and can be used for daily application also.

Note – Use pure or virgin coconut oil and organic curry leaves (free of pesticides) for making this curry leaves hair oil. I have used curry leaves from my kitchen garden.

Homemade Herbal Shampoo Recipes-How to make herbal shampoo at home

Most shampoos available in the market has chemicals in it especially sodium lauryl sulfate. It  is a detergent which causes dryness of hair, hair loss and even allergic reaction in some people.You can make your own herbal shampoo at home without any synthetic chemicals using natural ingredients. It is not only very cheap but also cleanses  and conditions your hair effectively and wonderfully.

1.Herbal Shampoo using shikkakai

Ingredients needed

Sikkakai -1 kg
Dried Lemon peels – 10-15
Curry leaves (dried) -1 cup
Hibiscus flowers (ordinary red flower alone)- 1 cup
Fenugreek -250 grams
Green gram – 250 grams
Soap nuts (deseed it, dry it ) – 100 grams

Dry everything in the sun and give it for grinding to the flour mill or you can buy all these powder (pure) separately from the market, mix it and use it.

Neem Leaves

We have never had any dandruff problem or lice problem or any scalp problem. Do you want to know the secret behind it? The secret is-my mother grinds a handful of dried neem leaves and tulsi leaves along with shikkakai.Since neem has powerful antiseptic properties,we have never had any problems related to hair.

You can grind henna leaves and gooseberries also along with shikkakai  to prevent your hair from premature graying.

Method to use -Take 2-3 tbsp of Sikkakai powder, mix it with a little water and cook on low flame till it starts thickening.  Switch off and let it cool. We do this to prevent the sikkakai from sticking to our scalp.

2.Herbal shampoo using Bengal gram or green gram flour :

Mix green gram flour (payatha  mavu) or Bengal gram flour (kadalai mavu) with buttermilk and use it to wash your hair. The hair becomes very soft, clean and shining. This works wonders for persons with dry hair.

3.Fenugreek shampoo

Soak fenugreek seeds overnight, grind it to a paste. Mix it with one portion of shikakai and 1/2 portion of green gram flour and use it as a shampoo.

4.Hibiscus shampoo

Take 15 hibiscus leaves and 5-6 hibiscus flowers (use only ordinary red variety) and boil them in a cup of water for 5 minutes. After it cools, grind it to a paste.

Mix this with 1/4 cup of gram flour or as required and wash your hair with it.

Alternatively, you can dry hibiscus leaves and flower in the sun, powder it, mix it with gram flour (kadalai mavu) and use it like a shampoo to wash your hair. It does not lather like the shampoos you get in the market but will cleanse your hair well.

5. Egg shampoo for people with hair fall and dandruff problems.

Take egg white alone, mix it with a little sour curd and apply well on the scalp. Wash with warm water and bengal gram flour after 20 minutes of application.

6.Arisi Kanji/Rice kanji for washing hair

Mix  rice kanji (the excess water drained after cooking rice) with  gram flour and use it to wash your hair. It cleans and  conditions your hair naturally.

 Tips – As far as possible avoid washing your hair with chlorinated water or salt water. Always rinse your hair well 2-3 times in fresh water.

Natural Remedies to cure Dandruff

Dandruff is the problem of the scalp and can be effectively treated with natural home remedies. If not treated, it can lead to other problems like hair loss, pimples and acne, so treat it at the earliest. Find few natural home remedies to cure dandruff  below

1.Curd is a very effective home remedy in the treatment of dandruff. Take half a cup of curd/ plain yoghurt and leave it outside for 3 days (i.e. do not refrigerate). Then massage it on your scalp and wash it off after 30 minutes with besan (bengal gram flour) or a mild shampoo.

2.Sour Curd mixed with a few drops of fresh lemon juice is also an effective natural remedy for dandruff. Apply the mixture and wash your hair after 20 minutes .

3.Take pure coconut oil, warm it, add juice of fresh lemon to it and massage your scalp with it. Wash your hair after 30 minutes. Follow it regularly twice a week. Alternatively you can warm coconut oil, apply it to your scalp and leave it overnight. Next morning, apply juice of one lemon and shampoo after an hour. This natural treatment can be followed once or twice a week to get best results.

4.Soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind it to a paste and apply it on the scalp. After 20 minutes wash it off with shikkakai or herbal shampoo. Follow it once in a week regularly to cure dandruff naturally. This is one of the oldest and most effective remedy in treating dandruff.

5.Dilute cider vinegar with an equal quantity of water and apply it on the scalp with cotton wool, wash it off after 20 minutes.

6.Grind white pepper with milk, warm it and apply it on the scalp, then wash it off after 15 minutes. Follow this treatment once in a week to get effective results.

Dandruff cure with Neem

Soak neem leaves in water overnight, filter that water and use it for the final rinse. This will help in controlling dandruff as neem leaves have antiseptic properties.

Heat coconut oil, switch off the gas when the oil starts smoking, then add a few neem flowers to it. Close it and keep it aside. When cooled, filter it and use that oil regularly once in a week. Massage it on your scalp 20 minutes before shampooing. Neem is very effective in dandruff treatment.

Application of neem oil 10 -15 minutes before bath is also an effective natural cure for dandruff.

Beetroot in curing dandruff

Boil beets in a cup of water, cool it, use that concentrated liquid to massage your scalp. It helps clear dandruff.

Alternatively, you can even grate raw beetroot, squeeze it juice, mix it with a little vinegar and massage the scalp with it, using your finger tips. Wash it off after 20 minutes with a mild shampoo.

Mix beetroot juice with a little ginger juice and apply on the scalp for 20 minutes and wash it off. This helps in controlling dandruff.

Do’s and Don’ts

Avoid using creamy hair conditioners, use mild herbal shampoos to wash your hair.

Keep your combs, brushes and pillow covers clean by washing them in an antiseptic solution.

Lastly include fresh fruits, soups, salads, yoghurt and sprouts in your diet and drink 8 glasses of water everyday. Avoid fried foods, spicy foods and sweets as much as possible.

1. Diet plays a very important role in maintaining the health of the hair. According to hair experts, vitamins and minerals are essential for healthy hair. One should include cereals, lots of leafy green vegetables, fruits and sprouts in one’s diet. Take food rich in protein, essential fatty acids, carotenes, iron, silica, zinc, Vitamins E , C ,Vitamin B (especially biotin) to have a healthy head of hair. Good sources of protein : milk, fish, eggs, cheese, soy.

2.Washing your hair is a very important part of hair care. Choosing the right shampoo for your hair is equally important. Avoid harsh shampoos as it will strip the hair of its natural oil. One can also use natural ingredients like sikkakai or besan or paste of fenugreek seeds to clean the hair. If that is not possible, then go for herbal or mild baby shampoos.

3. Always dilute shampoo in a little water and use it. Do not use it directly. Wet your hair first and then apply this diluted shampoo and lather it well.

4.Conditioning your hair is also an integral part of hair care. Conditioning moisturizes, protects your hair from damage, keeping it soft and healthy. Conditioning makes it easy for you to manage your hair. Rinse your hair well after shampooing and then apply conditioner. Choose a conditioner that is suitable for your hair texture. Follow the instructions on the pack for applying it. Thoroughly rinse the conditioner as its residue can make the hair look dull.

5.Massage your scalp with olive oil or warm coconut oil using your finger tips. Remain for half an hour and wash hair well. This natural remedy is an excellent conditioning treatment. It also helps in blood circulation. Follow this natural remedy once in a week for healthy hair. It also controls frizz.

6.Mayonnaise is an excellent conditioner for dry hair. Massage your scalp with mayonnaise and leave it for half an hour. Then shampoo as usual. Always rinse your hair well so that no traces of shampoo is left behind.

7.Do’s and Dont’s – Avoid using or limit using hair dryer to dry your hair. Dermatologists recommend letting your hair partially air dry before you style or comb. In this way, there is lesser chances of hair damage. After washing hair, avoid drying vigorously, instead dry it by blotting the hair with a towel.

8.Use wide toothed comb to remove tangles and do not comb wet hair as combing wet hair can stretch the strands causing them to break.

9.Do not tie your hair tightly or use normal rubber bands, as they break the hair. Always use coated rubber bands or soft hair ties of fabric.

10.Brush your hair daily using a brush with rounded tip bristles to improve blood circulation. Do it gently

11.Cover your hair with a scarf or shawl during travel to prevent tangles and to protect your hair from dust.

12.Avoid chemical treatment on your hair as they damage the hair and make it brittle. Dying, perming, bleaching, straightening cause damage to the hair, so try to avoid such practices.

13.Drink 8-9 glasses of water daily to keep yourself hydrated 

14.Exercise for 5 days a week as it improves blood circulation to your scalp.
