Herbal bath powder is easy to make at home, economical and harmless as it is natural. The ingredients needed for making this herbal powder are easily available in any nattu maruthu shop or Ayurveda shop. I am a huge fan of natural products and love to make my own herbal bath powder. I use this herbal powder not only as a face wash or bath powder but also as a face pack and as a scrub. After I started using this herbal powder, I noticed positive changes in my skin. My skin became soft, smooth and blemish free.

How to prepare Herbal Bath Powder at home

Ingredients needed 

Green gram (pachai payaru) – 1 kg

Wild Turmeric (kasturi manjal) – 100 grams

Spiked Ginger ( poolan kilangu) – 100 grams

Vetiver/Khus – a fistful

Neem leaves (veppilai) – handful  (not in the picture below as I powdered it separately and mixed with the rest)

Ingredients for Herbal Bath Powder

Dry everything together well in the sun for 2 days. Then get it ground in the mill to a fine powder. Store in any air tight container at room temperature. If you do not have flour mill near your place, powder it in a mixie, sieve it and store it. It stays good for more than 6 months. Avoid using wet spoon.

Green Gram 

Green Gram is commonly used in many homemade beauty treatment. It is an excellent cleanser. It removes dirt and dead cells and brightens the skin. It also prevents wrinkles

Wild Turmeric 

Wild Turmeric known as kasturi manjal in Tamil is an aromatic turmeric used specially for beauty purposes. It is used to cure many skin diseases. It also reduces facial hair growth. (This turmeric does not leave a yellow tint on the skin).

Spiked Ginger (Pulan kizhangu)

Pulan kizhangu is also known as Seemai Kichchili Kizhangu in Tamil and  “Kapur kachri” in Hindi. It has  antiseptic properties and a nice pleasing fragrance.

Vetiver

It is an aromatic grass which has antiseptic and cooling properties. It is used to treat acne, rashes and sores.

Neem Leaves

Neem leaves have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It cures many skin problems.

How to use this Herbal Bath Powder – Mix needed quantity with little water to make a paste. Use this paste instead of soap.

How to do a Facial at Home-Basic Home Facial-5 Steps to Facial at Home

It is very easy to do a facial at home following the simple steps given below. A facial once in 15 days helps to improve complexion, increases blood circulation, rejuvenates the skin and relieves tension. Your skin will feel refreshed and more alive naturally. Before doing a facial, keep all the ingredients ready, tie your hair back and then start.

Step #1 –Cleansing       

The first step in facial is cleansing. Remove all traces of makeup using facial cleansers suited for your skin type. You can use raw milk to cleanse your face. Dip cotton in milk and wipe your face to remove all makeup and dirt from your face. Use circular upward movements. Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water. If using store bought products, make sure that you use an oil free cleanser for oily skin and a milky or creamy cleanser for dry skin types.

Step#2  Exfoliating

The second step is to exfoliate. Exfoliation helps to remove dry skin cells on the surface. Use any natural homemade exfoliating scrub. Apply scrub to damp skin and massage gently focusing on forehead, chin and nose. Avoid skin around the eyes as they are very soft and sensitive. Exfoliation helps to remove dead cells and improve skin textures. It also helps to reduce large pores. Regular exfoliation reduces fine lines and wrinkles and keeps your skin much softer and younger.

Step#3 Steaming

The third step is facial steaming. Steaming opens the pores and helps to release  toxins and impurities built up on the skin. Bring water to boil in a big vessel. Remove from heat. With a towel forming a tent over your head, lower/lean your face over the vessel and capture the steam. Take care not to go too close as it might scald your skin.  You can add a tbsp of rose petals or lavender or thyme or rosemary to the water to get a stimulating cleanse. Steam for 10-15 minutes leaving a gap in between. Finish off by splashing cool water on your face. If you have problematic skin or have sensitive skin, consult  your skin specialist  prior to facial steaming.

Step#4 Facial Mask

The next step is to apply Facial Mask. Choose mask/packs according to your skin type. For oily skin, use mud/clay mask as it helps to absorb excess oil. For dry skin, use hydrating mask or creamy mask and  for sensitive skin use a light gel mask. Combination skin needs more than one mask to spot treat different areas. Place cotton soaked in rosewater or place cucumber slices on each eye and relax for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, wash with plenty of water.

Step #5 Moisturizing

The last step is moisturizing the skin. All skin types need moisturizing. Choose moisturizer suited for your skin type. For oily skin choose a light moisturizer or water based  product. For dry skin use a heavier, oil-based moisturizer. For sensitive skin, avoid  moisturizer containing fragrances or acids. Moisturizer helps to protect your skin and maintain the texture.

Because of the high water content, they help in cleansing the system of toxins. So it is good to include them in our diet in the form of salads, cucumber buttermilk, cucumber raita etc.

2.Cucumber is a natural toner, has cooling properties and helps to improve a dull greasy complexion.  It is used as an astringent to cleanse the skin. Grade or puree cucumber in a blender,sieve and extract the juice. Apply the juice all over your face and neck, leave it for 30 minutes and rinse well with cold water. It also helps in cleansing the pores.

3.Cucumber is a great ingredient for lightening the skin. It is a natural bleach. Mix 3 parts of cucumber juice with one part of lemon juice and apply this mixture all over the face and neck leaving the eyes and lips. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash off with cold water. 4.Cucumber Yogurt Hydrating mask for dry skin-Cucumber juice mixed with equal quantity of  natural yogurt heals sunburn and also hydrates dry skin. It prevents blackheads and dryness.

7.If you suffer from oily skin, rubbing cucumber slices on the face helps remove extra oil from the skin.

8.Cucumber anti tan mask – Mix  2 tbsp of powdered oats with  2 tsp of  plain yogurt and 2 tsp of  cucumber juice . Apply it on your face and rinse it off after 15 minutes.  It not only helps remove tan but also improves the texture of the skin.

9.A pack make of  equal quantity of cucumber juice, lemon juice and mint juice can help to reduce pimple marks or scars. Application of fresh cucumber juice can reduce freckles.

10.Cucumber anti wrinkle mask– Mix together 2 tbsp of  cucumber juice, little egg white and a tsp of lemon juice, apply all over your face and rinse it off after 15-20 minutes to keep wrinkles at bay.

Our kitchen is packed with beauty products which are cheap, harmless and effective if followed regularly.  These simple homemade beauty recipes are very effective, easy to prepare which you could include in your basic beauty care. Get started and pamper yourself at home!

1.Apricot:

Apricot anti aging pack:
Massaging face with apricot kernel oil moisturizes the skin and slows down the aging process.

Mashed apricot applied on the face brightens the skin.

Apricot Hair Conditioner:
Apricot kernel oil is a good hair conditioner. Warm apricot kernel oil and massage into your scalp for healthy and shining hair.

2.Banana:

Banana anti-wrinkle pack:
Mash banana well and apply to the face. Rinse off after 15 minutes. It is an excellent anti-wrinkle pack.

Banana pack for glowing skin:
Mash banana until creamy, mix 3-4 drops of fresh lemon juice and 1/2 tsp of honey and apply to the face.

Banana mask for blemishes
Mash banana well, add 2 tsp of plain yoghurt to it and mix it well. Apply it on your face and rinse off after 15 minutes. This home made pack is very effective to get rid of blemishes.

Dark circles around the eyes can be reduced by applying raw potato juice.

Potato as skin toner:
Potato is an skin excellent toner. Apply potato juice on the skin, leave it and wash it off after it dries.

Potato cleansing mask:
Mix potato juice, lemon juice, oatmeal and fuller’s earth well. Then apply this mixture on the face. It is an excellent cleansing mask. It also tightens the skin and reduces pores.

4.Oatmeal:

Oatmeal cleansing mask:
It is an excellent cleanser. It removes the dirt and softens the skin. Mix it with raw milk and a few drops of honey and use it as a pack.

Oatmeal anti-wrinkle pack:
Mix oatmeal with a little curd, honey, egg white and almond paste. Use it as a face pack to prevent wrinkles.

Mix together 1 tbsp of oatmeal and little milk. Cook on low flames till it becomes a soft paste. Add a tsp of rose water and apply it on the skin. Wash it off after 20 minutes. This mask is effective for aging skin.

Oatmeal exfoliating mask:
Mix oatmeal with a little warm water and make it into a paste. Apply it on the face and wash it after it dries with warm water.

5.Cucumber:

Cucumber Toning Pack:
Cucumber is a natural toner that lightens the skin and has cooling properties. Cucumber juice is used as an astringent to cleanse the skin. Grade cucumber, strain the juice using a cheese cloth. Apply that juice all over the face and neck to prevents pimples, blackheads and dryness.

The skin is a protective wrapper and also a major organ of excretion. So taking care of the skin helps you to have a soft and glowing skin. Very few of us are gifted with a perfect skin, but with right care, one can do a lot to improve the general condition of the skin. The old saying goes like this “Prevention is better than cure“. So it is better to take care of your skin rather than treating it after a problem occurs. All you have to do is to lead a healthy lifestyle which will definitely reflect on your skin. Keep your skin clean as a clean skin is a healthy skin. Here are some natural and practical tips, which you can follow on a daily basis to have a glowing skin and also to improve the general health of the skin.

Diet

A healthy glowing skin needs the right food. What you feed yourself inside will definitely reflect on your skin. So make it a point to have a healthy diet which should include lot of fresh fruits and vegetables in the form of salads and fresh juices.  Vitamin C does wonders to your skin. Some natural sources of vitamin C are lemon, oranges, cabbage, papaya, guava, strawberries, green peppers etc.

Avoid eating junk food which is not only bad for your skin but also for your health. Try to avoid eating  fried and greasy food. Avoid maida (all purpose flour) and white bread instead include brown bread, whole grains and oat bran in your diet. Substitute white rice with brown rice, sugar with honey or molasses or dates, tea or coffee with green tea or buttermilk.

Treat constipation 

Drink 2-3 glasses of warm water the first thing in the morning which will prevent constipation and therefore will have an effect on your skin or you can have a glass of warm lemon juice with a tsp of honey.

Soak 4-5 raisins in half a cup of water overnight and drink that water in the morning. It prevents constipation and gives a natural glowing skin.

Use natural or mild products for your skin.

1.Cleansing-You have to keep the skin clean for it to be healthy. Invest in a good cleanser suited for your skin. Gently  massage the cleanser and clean the pores with a moist cotton. It removes excess oil and dust. Before going to bed, see to it that you remove all traces of make-up. Do not apply anything, let your skin breathe.

2.Toning-Toning stimulates blood circulation and helps to tighten the pores.

3.Nourishing-Nourishing helps to rejuvenate the skin. Yoghurt, milk, almonds, honey, eggs, apricot are natural ingredients which are valuable in providing nourishment to the skin. Nourishing lotion or cream lubricates the skin and keeps it soft retaining the natural moisture present in the skin and prevents dryness of skin. Oily skin which produces excess oil does not need a rich nourishing cream.

4.Moisturizing is an integral part of skin care. It helps to keep the skin soft, smooth and healthy. As we grow old, our skin needs more moisturizing.

Protect your skin from pollution and strong sunlight

Wash your face whenever you go out and come back, to remove the dirt accumulated on your skin due to pollution. Also cleanse your face at least twice a day after you wake up in the morning and before going to bed. Instead of using soap frequently, you can use  green gram flour or besan (bengal gram flour) to wash your face. Mix it with a little water to form a paste and use it to cleanse your face.

Use an umbrella (preferably a colored one), wear sunglasses while going out in the sun. It protects your skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Keep your skin hydrated and cool

Have bath twice a day to keep your skin clean, cool and refreshed.

Drink enough water (at least 7-8 glasses per day) to keep your skin hydrated. Also drinking water helps to prevent a whole lot of skin problems and allergies.

Always bath in cool water or lukewarm water as hot water draws out natural oil from the skin and will dry your skin.

Good sleep 

One should have adequate sleep to have a healthy and glowing skin. A good night’s sleep does wonders to your skin.

Regular Exercise 

Do some form of exercise which you love, at least four days a week to improve blood circulation and to avoid stress.
